Your rankings look fine. Impressions are even up. Yet organic sessions have slid for months, and every industry newsletter blames the same culprit.
If your organic traffic dropped and AI Overviews seem the obvious cause, pause before you rebuild your strategy around that answer. AI Overviews do reduce clicks on many queries, and the research below shows it clearly. But core updates, tracking changes, seasonality and technical faults produce drops that look almost identical from a distance.
This guide gives you a diagnosis workflow first: five Search Console and analytics checks that separate an AI Overview drop from everything else. Then it sets out a recovery plan for the traffic AI Overviews really did take.
Key Takeaways
- AI Overviews do cut clicks on many queries. Pew Research Center found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one.
- The signature is stable rankings with falling CTR. If positions dropped too, the cause is more likely a ranking problem.
- "Impressions up, clicks down" has a mechanical explanation. Every link inside an AI Overview can earn an impression at the Overview's position.
- Rule out four look-alikes first. Core updates, tracking changes, seasonality and technical issues all mimic an AI Overview drop.
- Citations change the maths. Seer Interactive found cited brands earned 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited ones.
- Recovery means new targets and new metrics. Shift effort to queries AI does not satisfy, and measure leads rather than sessions alone.
Has Organic Traffic Dropped Because of AI Overviews?
Quick answer: Organic traffic dropped because of AI Overviews if your rankings held steady while click-through rate fell, mainly on informational queries that now show an Overview, and the drop does not line up with a core update, a tracking change or a seasonal pattern. Confirm it in Search Console by comparing clicks, impressions, CTR and position for the same queries across two periods. If rankings fell too, look for a different cause.
Start with what the evidence actually says, because it shapes what "normal" looks like.
What the Research Says About AI Overviews and Clicks
Three studies stand out, because each publisher explains its method and the figures come straight from their own pages.
| Study | Data | Key finding |
|---|---|---|
| Pew Research Center (July 2025) | 900 US adults, 68,879 searches, March 2025 | Users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary vs 15% without; 1% clicked a link inside the summary |
| Ahrefs (February 2026) | 300,000 keywords, December 2025 data | An AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower average CTR for the top-ranking page |
| Seer Interactive (April 2026) | 53 brands, 5.47M queries, Jan 2025 to Feb 2026 | Organic CTR on AI Overview queries hit 1.3% in December 2025, then recovered to 2.4% by February 2026 |
Google disputes the scale of the damage. In an August 2025 post, Google's Head of Search, Liz Reid, wrote that total organic click volume from Search had been relatively stable year over year, and that many third-party analyses rely on flawed methods or isolated examples.
Both things can be true. The total may be stable while specific sites and query types lose heavily. That is exactly why you need to diagnose your own data rather than borrow an industry average.
The 5-Check Diagnosis Workflow
Work through these in order. Each check either confirms AI Overviews as the cause or points you somewhere else.
Check 1: Did rankings fall, or only clicks?
Open the Search Console Performance report. Compare the last three months with the same three months a year earlier, and switch on clicks, impressions, CTR and average position.
- Position stable, CTR down: consistent with AI Overviews or other SERP features taking clicks.
- Position down, clicks down: you lost rankings. AI Overviews are not the main story.
Then filter to your top 20 losing queries and search each one. Note whether an AI Overview appears and whether your site is cited in it.
Check 2: Does the drop line up with a Google update?
Compare the date your decline started with the Google Search Status Dashboard. It lists the March 2026 core update (27 March), the May 2026 core update (21 May) and several spam updates, most recently on 24 September 2026.
A sharp step down within days of a core update, with positions falling, points to a quality reassessment rather than AI Overviews. In contrast, AI Overview losses tend to show up as a gradual CTR slide on stable positions.
Check 3: Did your tracking change?
Many "traffic drops" are measurement drops. Check for a GA4 tag removed during a redesign, a new consent banner that blocks analytics until users accept, a changed filter, or a domain or protocol move that split your data.
The test is simple: compare Search Console clicks with GA4 organic sessions. If Search Console clicks held steady while GA4 fell, the problem is tracking, not Google. Also look for Search Console's own system annotations on the chart, which flag known data processing issues.
Check 4: Is it seasonal?
Always compare year over year, not month over month. A tax consultant's traffic in August will never match March, and a wedding photographer's winter peak is not a trend. If the same dip appeared last year, you have your answer.
Check 5: Is something technically broken?
Check the Pages report for a rise in excluded URLs, confirm that robots.txt and your CDN still allow Googlebot, and inspect a few key URLs. Redirect chains after a migration, accidental noindex tags and canonical errors can all remove pages quietly. Our Google Search Console issue fixing service handles these errors when the list gets long.
Reading the results
| What you see | Most likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Stable position, lower CTR, AI Overview on query | AI Overviews | Follow the recovery plan below |
| Positions fell soon after an update date | Core or spam update | Review content quality and helpfulness |
| Search Console steady, GA4 down | Tracking change | Fix tags, consent setup or filters |
| Same dip last year | Seasonality | Plan content ahead of the peak |
| Pages excluded or not indexed | Technical fault | Fix indexing, then request recrawl |
Why Impressions Go Up While Clicks Go Down
The "clicks down, impressions up" pattern is the most common complaint in SEO forums, and it has a partly mechanical explanation.
According to Google's Search Console documentation, an AI Overview occupies a single position, and every link inside it is assigned that same position. If your page is linked in an Overview at the top of the results, it can record an impression even when the searcher never scrolls to your classic listing. In AI Mode, a follow-up question counts as a brand new query, so one conversation can generate several impressions.
As a result, impressions can rise because you are being shown more often, while clicks fall because the answer was already on the screen. This is not automatically bad news. Seer Interactive's 2026 analysis makes the same point: if clicks held steady while impressions doubled, you may simply have earned more citations. The warning sign is when clicks fall in absolute terms on queries that matter commercially.
To see which pages are showing in AI features, open the Generative AI performance report in Search Console. It became available to all websites on 31 August 2026 and reports impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device.
The Recovery Plan
Once you have confirmed AI Overviews are the main cause, stop chasing the lost clicks one by one. Instead, rebalance where your traffic comes from.
1. Pivot to queries AI does not fully satisfy
AI Overviews answer simple informational questions well. They satisfy far fewer searchers who need to act: compare prices, book, buy, hire, calculate or check something specific to them.
Seer Interactive's data supports this shift. Organic CTR on queries without an AI Overview rose from 2.8% in January 2025 to 3.8% in February 2026. Prioritise pages for commercial and transactional intent, local services, tools and calculators, and topics that need your first-hand experience.
2. Earn citations inside the Overview
You cannot stop Google showing an Overview, but you can try to be in it. Seer found that being cited brought 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited, although cited results still trailed queries with no Overview by 38%.
Earning citations comes down to eligibility, clear answers and original content. Our guide on how to rank in Google AI Overviews covers the full process, based on Google's own guidance.
3. Make every remaining click count
Fewer visitors means each one matters more. Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with people spending more time on the site. Meet that intent:
- Put a clear next step on every informational page, such as a quote form, sample report or consultation link.
- Link informational posts to the matching service or product page.
- Remove friction from forms and speed up mobile pages.
- Add proof near the call to action: reviews, case studies, credentials.
4. Change what you measure
Sessions alone now understate your visibility. Build a report that tracks:
- AI feature impressions from the Generative AI performance report.
- Citations on your top 20 commercial queries, checked by hand each month.
- Leads and revenue from organic, not just visits.
- Referrals from AI assistants in GA4. Our guide on how to track ChatGPT traffic in GA4 shows how to separate them.
Also add your own annotations in Search Console when you publish or change key pages, so future drops are easier to explain.
When the Drop Is Not About AI Overviews
If your checks showed falling rankings, a failed migration or no meaningful growth to begin with, AI Overviews are the wrong diagnosis. A site that never built traffic has a different problem entirely. If your SEO never took off, read our guide on why SEO may not be working after six months instead.
When you cannot tell which cause applies, a structured SEO audit from our specialist team separates the signals using your own Search Console and GA4 data, with the raw exports attached.
Frequently Asked Questions
Organic traffic decreased incredibly, is it AI or something else?
Check whether your rankings fell. If average positions held while CTR dropped on queries that show AI Overviews, AI is the likely cause. If positions fell, especially soon after a core update, or if GA4 dropped while Search Console clicks stayed steady, the cause is something else.
Is anyone else noticing impressions up but clicks down?
Yes, it is a widespread pattern. Search Console gives every link in an AI Overview the Overview's position, so pages can gain impressions from Overviews while losing clicks to the answer on screen. Look at absolute clicks on your commercial queries before deciding it is a problem.
How do you tell whether AI Overviews took your clicks or your SEO just got worse?
Compare the same queries across two periods. Falling CTR on stable positions, concentrated on queries showing an AI Overview, points to AI Overviews. Falling positions and impressions point to an SEO or technical problem.
Is Google killing organic traffic with AI Overviews?
Not for every site, but for some query types the loss is real. Pew Research Center and Ahrefs both found lower click rates when AI Overviews appear, and Seer Interactive found the steepest losses on informational queries where a brand is not cited. Seer's 2026 data also showed CTR on AI Overview queries recovering in early 2026, so the impact varies sharply by site and query type.
Google says AI Overviews haven't hurt clicks, but is that what you're seeing?
Google's Liz Reid wrote in August 2025 that total organic click volume had been relatively stable year over year. A stable total can still hide heavy losses for particular sites, so rely on your own Search Console data. Then respond: target queries that still send clicks, work to be cited in the Overviews that remain, and measure leads as well as sessions.
Final Thoughts
A traffic decline feels urgent, which is exactly when teams make expensive guesses. Diagnose first: check rankings, update dates, tracking, seasonality and technical health before you rewrite a single page.
If the evidence does point to AI, respond with a plan rather than panic. Target queries that still send clicks, earn citations where Overviews appear, and judge success by leads as well as visits. When organic traffic dropped because of AI Overviews, the sites that recover are the ones that change what they measure and where they compete.
