A title of thirty W characters is roughly twice the width of thirty i characters. Google truncates when the rendered line runs out of space, so a character count cannot tell you whether your title fits. This tool measures the real rendered width of your exact string and wraps it the way a browser would.
Google replaces title links on a large share of results, using your H1, anchor text, or on-page headings instead. A perfect preview is not a promise. The most reliable way to keep your own title is to make it accurate, specific, and not obviously written for a crawler.
Google adjusts SERP layout constantly, and widths differ by device, browser zoom, and result type. The numbers here are a well-calibrated model, not a specification. Treat the amber zone as a warning, not a hard line — and put the important words first regardless.
How much of your snippet actually survives
Google truncates on pixel width, not character count, so a title full of capitals and wide letters is cut far earlier than the character limits people quote.
Four rewrites and why they won
Same page, same position, different snippet. These are the patterns that repeatedly move click-through in Search Console.
Why Google rewrote your title
Google replaces titles on roughly a third of results. These are the triggers, in the order we see them.

Be wary of any agency whose reporting is a tool dashboard with their logo on it. Tools measure; they do not decide what matters, and every one of these will happily generate a hundred findings that change nothing. What you are paying for is the judgement about which three of those hundred are worth your developers’ time.
Title and description questions
Including the ones where the honest answer is less tidy than a character limit.
If your titles are fine and clicks are still falling, the cause is usually further up: intent mismatch, a competitor holding a richer result, or an AI Overview absorbing the query. That is on-page SEO work rather than a copywriting problem.
