How to Rank in Google AI Overviews: 9 Steps Google Actually Supports [2026]

You rank on page one for a question your customers ask every day. Yet when you search it, an AI Overview sits above your result and cites three other sites. Your page, the one that actually answers the question, is nowhere in the summary.

Most advice on how to rank in Google AI Overviews is guesswork dressed up as strategy. Fortunately, Google has now published its own guidance: a detailed AI optimisation guide, a page on AI features, and a Search Console report that measures AI Overview impressions directly.

This guide turns that material into nine practical steps. You will learn how Google chooses sources, how to check that your pages are eligible, which content patterns earn citations, which popular tactics you can safely ignore, and how to measure your progress.

Key Takeaways

  • AI Overviews run on Google's normal ranking systems. Google's AI optimisation guide says its AI features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems.
  • Eligibility is simple but strict. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. There are no extra technical requirements.
  • Query fan-out widens the net. Google runs several related searches for one question, so a page can be cited for a sub-question it answers well.
  • Being cited is what counts. Seer Interactive's 2026 data found cited brands earn far more clicks per impression than uncited ones on the same results.
  • Many "AEO hacks" do nothing for Google. Google says to ignore llms.txt, content chunking, rewriting for AI and inauthentic mentions.
  • You can measure it now. Search Console's Generative AI performance report reached all sites on 31 August 2026.

How to Rank in Google AI Overviews

Quick answer: To rank in Google AI Overviews, make sure your page is indexed and eligible for a snippet, then publish original, expert content that answers the main question and its likely follow-up questions clearly. Google builds AI Overviews by retrieving pages through its core ranking systems and running related "fan-out" searches, so strong SEO and genuinely useful content are what earn citations. No one can guarantee a citation, but you can measure your progress in Search Console's Generative AI performance report.

Before the steps, it helps to understand how an AI Overview is assembled.

How Google Chooses Sources for an AI Overview

Google's AI optimisation guide, last updated on 10 July 2026, names two techniques behind its AI features.

1. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). Google also calls this grounding. Its core ranking systems retrieve relevant, up-to-date pages from the Search index. The model then reviews those pages and writes a response, with clickable links to the pages that support it.

2. Query fan-out. The model issues a set of related searches at the same time to gather more information. Google's own example: for "how to fix a lawn that's full of weeds", fan-out searches might include "best herbicides for lawns" and "how to prevent weeds in lawn".

In short, the AI Overview does not replace ranking; it sits on top of it. A page has to be retrievable by Google's normal systems before the model can cite it. However, fan-out means you are not only competing for the main query. You are also competing for every sub-question the model decides to ask.

AI Overviews do not appear on every query

According to Google's page on AI features, AI Overviews show only when Google's systems decide they add something beyond classic Search, so they often do not trigger. Seer Interactive's 2026 study gives a sense of where they do: across 30,842 tracked informational queries, comparison queries triggered an AI Overview 95.4% of the time and question-format queries 85.9% of the time.

That makes comparison and question content the main battleground. If your content is mostly product pages and short service descriptions, you may simply not be competing where AI Overviews appear.

Step 1: Confirm Your Pages Are Eligible

Google states that to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. That breaks down into five checks.

RequirementHow to check itCommon fix
Crawlablerobots.txt and CDN settings allow GooglebotRemove blanket bot blocks and firewall rules
IndexedURL Inspection in Search Console shows "URL is on Google"Fix noindex tags, canonicals and thin duplicates
Snippet-eligibleNo nosnippet or very low max-snippet on the pageRemove or relax preview controls
Included in AI featuresSearch Console, Settings, then Search generative AIKeep the site set to include (the default)
Text-based contentKey answers appear as real text in the HTMLReplace text-in-images and hidden tabs

Two of these catch sites out regularly. First, snippet controls also limit AI features: Google says nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet are the way to restrict what appears from your pages in Search, including AI features. Second, the Search generative AI control, rolled out to all sites on 31 August 2026, can exclude a whole property. Sites are included by default, but it is worth confirming nobody changed it.

If indexing problems run deeper, our technical SEO services resolve crawl, rendering and canonical issues at scale.

8 More Steps to Get Cited in AI Overviews

Once your pages are eligible, the work shifts to making them the best source for the question.

Step 2: Answer the main question early and clearly

Put a direct, complete answer near the top of the page or section. Then support it with detail, evidence and examples. Readers skim, and a clear answer makes your page easier for Google's systems to match to the question too.

Our free AI extractability checker shows how easily a machine can pull a clean answer from any page.

Step 3: Cover the follow-up questions

Think about what someone asks next. A page on "how much does a solar installation cost" should also address subsidies, payback period, maintenance and financing, because those are natural fan-out searches.

However, do not create a separate thin page for every variation. Google's guide warns that producing content mainly to target fan-out queries, in order to manipulate AI responses, violates its spam policies. One thorough page beats twenty near-duplicates.

Step 4: Publish non-commodity content

This is the step Google emphasises most. Its guide says unique, valuable content will likely influence your presence in AI search more than any other suggestion. It contrasts commodity content, such as "7 Tips for First-Time Homebuyers", with first-hand, experienced takes that go beyond common knowledge.

In practice, that means original data, real costs, worked examples, case notes, photographs of your own work and opinions you can defend. If an AI model could write your page without you, it is unlikely to be the page it cites.

Step 5: Show who wrote it and why they know

Name the author, give their relevant experience, and cite primary sources for any figure. Google's helpful content guidance asks you to consider who created a page, how and why, and it calls "why" perhaps the most important question. The same trust signals help a page stand out when the model reviews several candidates.

Step 6: Structure pages for people

Use descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists for steps and tables for comparisons. Google notes that people appreciate pages organised by sections with clear headings, and it adds that there is no ideal page length. The goal is clarity, not a special format.

Step 7: Support text with images and video

Google's guide recommends high-quality images and video where they genuinely help, because AI features can surface them too. A clear diagram or short demonstration can give your page an extra route into the answer.

Step 8: Keep important pages fresh

RAG favours relevant, up-to-date pages. Review your key pages when prices, rules or products change, and update the facts rather than just the date. Stale figures are a quick way to lose a citation to a competitor who kept up.

Step 9: Earn genuine mentions and links

Google says its AI features can reflect what is being said about you across blogs, videos and forums. It also warns that seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem. Real coverage, expert quotes in publications and helpful community participation build the authority that core ranking rewards.

Content Patterns That Tend to Get Cited

None of these are special AI formats. They are simply the patterns that make a page the most useful answer.

PatternWhy it helpsExample
Direct definition plus contextAnswers "what is" queries in one clear passage"A home loan balance transfer moves your loan to a new lender at a lower rate."
Comparison tableComparison queries trigger AI Overviews most oftenPlan A vs Plan B by price, limits and support
Numbered processMatches "how to" intent and follow-upsSteps to file a GST return, in order
Original numbersOffers something no other source hasYour own survey, pricing data or test results
Specific caveatsAdds nuance commodity pages skip"This method does not work on shared hosting plans"

What to Ignore: Google's Mythbusting List

Google's AI optimisation guide includes a section on what you do not need to do. For Google Search, you can safely skip:

  • llms.txt and "special" AI markup. Google Search does not use them, and they neither help nor harm your visibility.
  • Chunking content. There is no need to split pages into tiny pieces; Google can understand several topics on one page.
  • Rewriting content just for AI. Google's systems understand synonyms, so you do not need every long-tail variation.
  • Seeking inauthentic mentions. Core ranking focuses on quality, and spam systems filter manipulation.
  • Overfocusing on structured data. It is not required for AI features and there is no special schema, although it still helps with rich results.

Google also warns against third-party tools that claim to use "internal" Google metrics. No outside tool has access to its ranking or AI systems.

How to Measure Your AI Overview Visibility

Guessing is no longer necessary.

  1. Open the Generative AI performance report. In Search Console, it shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by page, country, device or date. The Search Console help page confirms it reached all websites on 31 August 2026.
  2. Compare pages over time. Look for pages gaining or losing AI impressions after you update them.
  3. Read position data carefully. Google counts an AI Overview as a single position, and every link inside it gets that same position.
  4. Track clicks and conversions separately. Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with people spending more time on site. Compare engagement in GA4.
  5. Spot-check key queries by hand. Run your most valuable questions monthly and note which sources are cited.

Why does citation matter so much? Seer Interactive's 2026 update, covering 53 brands and 5.47 million queries, found that being cited in an AI Overview brought 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited. Even so, cited results still trailed queries with no AI Overview by 38%. For a fuller reporting framework, see our guide to AI search visibility metrics.

AI Overviews vs AI Mode

AI Overviews appear inside normal Search results. AI Mode is a separate conversational tab for deeper questions and follow-ups. Google says both may use query fan-out, yet they can use different models and techniques, so the links they show will vary.

For most websites, the same steps above apply to both. Local businesses are the exception, because Business Profile, reviews and Maps data play a much larger role. We cover that separately in our guide on how to get your business in Google AI Mode.

If you would rather have a specialist team run this across your whole site, our AEO services combine eligibility fixes, content upgrades and monthly Search Console reporting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are you optimizing your content to get cited by Google AI Overview?

Start by confirming the page is indexed and snippet-eligible. Then answer the main question clearly near the top, cover the natural follow-up questions on the same page, add original information such as your own data or experience, and keep facts current. Google says these AI features rely on its core ranking systems, so strong SEO underpins everything.

How do you get Google's AI to cite your blog content?

Write posts that add something new: first-hand experience, original numbers or expert judgement. Google's guide contrasts commodity content that repeats common knowledge with non-commodity content that goes beyond it. The second kind is far more likely to be cited.

How to get cited in AI Overview and LLMs? Any tips?

For Google, follow its published guidance: eligibility, helpful content and genuine authority. Skip llms.txt for this purpose, since Google says Search does not use it. Other assistants use their own crawlers and sources, so check that those crawlers can reach your site too. Across all of them, clear answers and real third-party mentions help.

How is everyone tracking and handling citations in AI Overviews?

Search Console's Generative AI performance report is now the primary source, available to every site since 31 August 2026. It shows impressions by page, so you can see which pages are being linked. Pair it with monthly manual checks of your key queries.

How are you measuring the impact of Google AI Overview on your CTR?

Compare click-through rates for the same pages before and after AI Overviews appeared on their queries, and check engagement in GA4 as well as raw clicks. Remember that Search Console gives every link in an AI Overview the same position, which can shift your average position figures.

Final Thoughts

AI Overviews reward the same things Google has always rewarded, applied with more precision. Your page must be eligible, it must answer the question better than the alternatives, and it must come from a source Google has reason to trust.

So skip the hacks, fix eligibility first, then invest in original content that covers the full question. Measure it in Search Console every month. That, in the end, is how to rank in Google AI Overviews: be the best answer, and make it easy for Google to see that you are.
