A shopper types "best running shoes for flat feet under ₹6,000" into an AI assistant. Seconds later, they see four products, a comparison of cushioning and price, and a summary of what reviewers liked. Your store sells two shoes that fit perfectly. Neither appears.
That is the problem AEO for ecommerce solves. Answer engine optimisation for an online store means making your products easy for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features to find, understand, trust and recommend. It overlaps with classic ecommerce SEO, but the inputs are different: product feeds, review summaries, third-party comparisons and plain facts on the page matter more than a keyword in a title tag.
This guide explains how product discovery currently works on each platform, what is live in India versus the US, and the specific fixes to make on product pages, feeds and review profiles. It ends with a 30-day checklist you can hand to your team.
Key Takeaways
- Each assistant finds products differently. ChatGPT uses structured product data from merchants and third-party providers, Perplexity ranks listings on authority and relevance, and Google AI Mode reads from its Shopping Graph.
- ChatGPT shopping is live only in the US for now. OpenAI's merchants page says shopping is live for US users and will expand to more regions over time.
- Product feeds are the new front door. Google Merchant Center feeds and OpenAI's product feed programme give you control over price, stock and product details.
- Reviews are read and summarised. ChatGPT shows review summaries based on reviews from public websites, so your reputation off your own site shapes the answer.
- Nobody can pay for organic placement. OpenAI and Perplexity both say their product results are not ads, which is exactly why the fundamentals matter.
- India already has AI shopping on Google. Google launched its biggest AI Mode shopping upgrade for India in April 2026.
What Is AEO for Ecommerce?
Quick answer: AEO for ecommerce is the work of making your products and store visible inside AI answers, such as ChatGPT shopping results, Perplexity product cards and Google AI Mode. It combines accurate product feeds, complete product pages that AI crawlers can read, genuine reviews on public sites, and mentions in trusted comparisons. It builds on ecommerce SEO rather than replacing it.
Classic ecommerce SEO asks, "Does my category page rank for this keyword?" AEO asks a different question: "When someone describes what they need in a full sentence, does the assistant pick my product, and does it describe it correctly?"
That shift changes where the work happens. A large part of it now sits outside your website, in feeds, marketplaces, review platforms and comparison articles.
How Product Discovery Works in AI Search Today
Before fixing anything, it helps to know what each platform says about how it chooses products. The details below come from each company's own documentation.
ChatGPT shopping
According to OpenAI's Shopping with ChatGPT Search help article, when a question shows shopping intent, ChatGPT can show product options with images, details and links to merchants. To choose them, it considers structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers, such as price and product description, along with other third-party content.
When a shopper clicks a product, ChatGPT may list several merchants selling it. OpenAI says merchants are ranked on factors like availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller of the item.
There are three more points worth knowing:
- Product results are not ads. OpenAI says they are selected independently and are not influenced by partnerships. Ads are shown separately.
- Shopify and Etsy stores are already connected. According to OpenAI's merchants page, catalogues from these platforms are integrated with no extra setup.
- Checkout now happens on your site. OpenAI says it is moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience, so purchases complete on merchant-owned websites or apps, with no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT.
Other merchants can apply to share a direct product feed. OpenAI says applicants join a waitlist, and it plans a self-service merchant portal later this year.
Perplexity
Perplexity shows product cards inside its answers. Its help article on Instant Buy says the answer engine ranks product listings on authority and relevance, and is more likely to recommend merchants who provide deeper product details such as availability, reviews, pricing and specifications. Perplexity also says it analyses product reviews across multiple sites, and that advertisers cannot pay to appear in its related products section.
Instant Buy, its in-answer checkout, is currently available to users in the United States. For a deeper look at how Perplexity picks sources in general, see our guide on how to get cited by Perplexity.
Google AI Mode and AI Overviews
Google's AI optimisation guide says its generative AI responses can include product listings and product information, and that using Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profiles can help products appear in AI responses and in regular search results.
Behind those listings sits Google's Shopping Graph. In its April 2026 announcement for India, Google said the Shopping Graph holds more than 50 billion products, with 2 billion updated every hour. The same post described its biggest upgrade to shopping in AI Mode in India, including comparison tables with insights drawn from reviews, launching in English with Hindi to follow.
Google is also adding tools for merchants. In January 2026, it announced new Merchant Center attributes for conversational shopping, such as answers to common product questions and compatible accessories, starting with a small group of retailers. Merchant Center's help centre also lists AI shopping insights, including share of voice across Search and Gemini, as coming soon to the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand.
India vs the US: What Is Actually Live
Many AI shopping guides assume a US audience. For an Indian store, or an Indian brand selling abroad, availability decides where to put effort first.
| Platform | How products get in | Status for shoppers in India | Status in the US | What you control |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT shopping | Crawling, third-party data, Shopify or Etsy catalogues, direct feeds by application | OpenAI says shopping is live in the US and will expand to more regions | Live for Free, Go, Plus and Pro users | Page content, feed data, reviews on public sites |
| Perplexity | Crawling plus merchant data | Product answers available; Instant Buy is US only | Product cards and Instant Buy | Product details, reviews, crawler access |
| Google AI Mode | Shopping Graph, fed by Merchant Center and the web | Upgraded shopping experience launched April 2026 | Live, plus Business Agent for eligible US retailers | Merchant Center feed, product pages, reviews |
| Google AI Overviews | Google's search index | Live | Live | Standard SEO and indexing |
The practical takeaway is simple. For a store selling mainly in India, Google Merchant Center is the highest-leverage feed today. ChatGPT still matters, because its search answers still name and link brands, but its dedicated shopping experience is not yet live in India. TechCrunch also reported in September 2026 that Google is testing a Buy button for Flipkart listings in Gemini and AI Mode in India, which suggests in-answer buying is coming to Indian shoppers soon.
Product Page Fixes That Help AI Assistants
Feeds get you into the catalogue. Your product pages decide whether an assistant can answer detailed questions about the product, and whether it trusts what it reads.
Put the full specification in plain HTML
Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your size charts, materials or compatibility notes load through scripts or sit in image files, an assistant may never see them. View the page source and confirm that the important facts appear in the HTML itself.
Answer the questions shoppers actually ask
Shoppers now describe their situation: "for flat feet", "safe for a two-year-old", "fits a 15-inch laptop". Write a short, factual section on each key product page that answers those questions directly. Pull them from your customer service emails, returns reasons and review text, not from guesswork.
Keep titles, prices and stock consistent everywhere
OpenAI notes that merchants often use varying titles for the same product, and that ChatGPT may simplify them. You make its job easier when your product name, variant names, price and availability match across your site, your feed and your marketplace listings. Stale prices are a common reason assistants show a competitor instead.
Use structured data, but do not treat it as magic
Product, offer, review and return policy markup still help Google show rich results. Google's AI guide is clear, though, that structured data is not required for generative AI search and that no special markup is needed. Treat schema as good hygiene. You can build clean Product markup with our free schema markup generator.
Check that AI crawlers can reach you
Confirm that your robots.txt and CDN allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Blocking GPTBot, which is used for training, does not remove you from ChatGPT search, but blocking OAI-SearchBot does.
Feeds: Merchant Center and ChatGPT Product Feeds
If product pages are your shop window, feeds are the stock list that assistants read first.
Google Merchant Center. Keep your feed complete and current: accurate titles, GTINs where they exist, sale prices, shipping costs, return policy and stock status. Fix disapprovals quickly, because a disapproved product is not eligible to show in Google's shopping results. Watch for the new conversational attributes as Google expands them beyond the first group of retailers.
ChatGPT product feeds. If you sell on Shopify or Etsy, OpenAI says your catalogue is already integrated. Otherwise, you can apply through OpenAI's merchants page, where feeds are supported through SFTP, APIs and common feed providers. OpenAI's own FAQ answers a common question well: you do not need a feed if ChatGPT already crawls your site, but a feed gives you more control over how products appear.
One source of truth. Generate every feed from the same product database. When your Merchant Center price, ChatGPT feed price and on-page price disagree, every platform has a reason to distrust you.
Reviews and Third-Party Comparison Presence
AI assistants do not only read your site. They read what other people say about your products.
ChatGPT displays review summaries based on reviews from public websites, and its feature labels such as "Budget-friendly" can come from third-party data, according to OpenAI. Perplexity says it analyses reviews across multiple sites. Google's India announcement highlights comparison tables with insights from reviews.
That makes three things important:
- Genuine reviews on public platforms. Encourage every buyer to review, not only happy ones. Reviews locked inside a widget that loads only through scripts may be invisible to AI crawlers.
- Presence in comparison content. Assistants often answer "best X for Y" questions by drawing on buying guides, comparison articles, YouTube reviews and forum threads. Earn coverage by sending products to credible reviewers and publishing honest comparison pages of your own.
- Marketplace listings that match your site. If you sell on Amazon, Flipkart or Nykaa as well, keep product names and specifications identical, so assistants recognise the same product across sources.
Google's AI guide warns that seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem. Paid fake reviews and planted forum posts are a risk, not a shortcut.
A 30-Day AEO Checklist for Online Stores
Work through these in order. The first week fixes access, and the rest builds signals.
- Confirm robots.txt, CDN and firewall settings allow OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot.
- View the source of your top 20 product pages and confirm that specifications, price and stock appear in the HTML.
- Audit Merchant Center for disapprovals, missing GTINs and price mismatches, and fix them.
- If you are not on Shopify or Etsy, apply for OpenAI's product feed programme.
- Add a short "who this is for" and FAQ section to each top product, using real customer questions.
- Align product titles and specifications across your site, feeds and marketplaces.
- Set up a review request flow for every order, and publish reviews on crawlable pages.
- Pitch five credible reviewers or comparison sites in your category.
- Test 20 real shopping prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and record who appears.
- Track AI referral traffic in GA4 so you can see what changes. Our guide to tracking ChatGPT traffic in GA4 shows how to set it up.
How Billion Game Approaches Ecommerce AEO
We start with a prompt audit. Our specialist team tests the shopping questions your buyers actually ask, across the major assistants, and records which products and sources appear. Our AI citation audit covers 100 prompts across four engines in one market, and costs $2,500 to $5,000.
From there, we fix feeds and product pages first, then build review and comparison presence. For Indian stores, AEO is included in every plan, from ₹50,000 a month for a single-location business to ₹90,000 a month for multi-location growth work. Reporting comes from your own Search Console and GA4, and there are no lock-in contracts. If you need the full SEO programme alongside it, see our ecommerce SEO services.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you pay ChatGPT to recommend your business?
Not in its organic product results. OpenAI says product results are selected independently and are not ads. Ads in ChatGPT are shown separately from those results.
Can I list products on ChatGPT?
Yes. Shopify and Etsy catalogues are already integrated, according to OpenAI. Other merchants can apply to share a product feed through OpenAI's merchants page, which currently places applicants on a waitlist.
Do I need a product feed if ChatGPT already crawls my site?
No. OpenAI says a feed is not required, but it gives you more control over how your products appear, including more accurate and up-to-date prices and details.
How do I make AI recommend my product?
Make the product easy to understand and easy to trust. Publish complete specifications in plain HTML, keep feeds accurate, collect genuine reviews on public sites, and earn mentions in credible comparisons.
Is ChatGPT shopping available in India?
Not yet, according to OpenAI, which says shopping is currently live in the US and will expand to more regions. ChatGPT search still answers product questions for Indian users, so crawlable pages and reviews still matter.
What is AEO vs SEO for an online store?
SEO focuses on ranking pages in search results. AEO focuses on being chosen and described correctly inside AI answers. For stores, the two share a foundation, since Google says its AI features are rooted in core search ranking.
Final Thoughts
AI assistants are becoming the first place many shoppers compare products, and each platform explains, in its own documentation, what it looks for: accurate structured data, complete product details, genuine reviews and a trustworthy merchant.
None of that requires tricks. It requires clean feeds, readable product pages and a reputation that exists beyond your own website. Start with the checklist above, measure what changes, and treat AEO for ecommerce as a steady part of how your store earns visibility.
